A Mindful Moment

By Clair Norman and Jodi Beland

A Mindful Moment brought to you….

You have probably heard the word “mindfulness.”  Some may say it’s a current buzz word, but people have been practicing it for thousands of years.  Do you know what it is?  According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, the founder of Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, “Mindfulness is awareness that arises through paying attention, on purpose, in the present moment, non-judgmentally.  It’s about knowing what is on your mind.”

Stress is often caused by reflecting about what has happened in the past or worrying about what will happen in the future.  If you can train your brain to stay in the present moment, stress is reduced.  We want to help you become more mindful, to have less stress in your life, and have another tool in your toolbox for when life gets hard.  In the coming months, we will do this through a variety of avenues.  In June, we participated in the Peace, Love, RVA Yoga Festival.  It was the first of its kind in Richmond, and we were thrilled to participate by bringing mindfulness techniques to children and their families.  We will share Mindful Moments on our Facebook page and Instagram.  These posts will offer simple techniques that you can incorporate into your everyday life whether you are at school, work, or a social setting.

Most exciting…Our Mindful Mondays program will return in October, and we have expanded the program to middle school student this year. This program meets once a month October through March.  Led by our Mindfulness Team, youth are invited to learn the practice of mindfulness, and to do absolutely nothing except relax for one hour. To learn more about it and to register, please visit http://www.ckgfoundation.org/mindfulmondays/.

Our hope is that you find the gift in each moment by being present.  Mindfulness can help, and we are here to help you!
