"A Reflection on Independence"

Happy summer and happy 4th of July! As I reflect on the gratitude of independence and freedom, I can’t help but think of how we all find ourselves dependent on our thoughts, many of which seem to be negative. When you stop to listen to your inner voice and the things you say to yourself, ask yourself, “Would you talk to a friend this way?” Why do we tend to say things to ourselves that we would never be as cruel to say to a friend? I encourage you to spend five minutes everyday in a quiet place, being grateful for exactly who you are. Grateful for the challenging times because you survive these times. Grateful for all your scars, scrapes, and bruises, both internal and external, because they represent that you have experienced life, and because you have lived, you have perspective. Perspective that only knows real happiness if you have experienced real pain. Perspective that appreciates, understands, and strives to always choose empathy over judgment.

Cameron had two quotes from Marcus Aurelius taped to her bedroom wall. “The happiness of your life depends upon the quality of your thoughts,” and “The soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.” If you happen to see fireworks as you celebrate July 4th, make a commitment to yourself that your thoughts will be as bright and spectacular as the colors that dance across the sky.
